About

Træna 365 is the development company behind Ytri Island Retreat. Shaped through close collaboration, the project brings together architecture, landscape, craft, and people to create a place designed for year-round life, work, and retreat.

What follows on this page is a glimpse into the architects, designers, collaborators, and contributors who have helped shape the vision — and the collective effort behind bringing Ytri to life.

Architecture & Interior Design

Designed by Vardehaugen Architects, the buildings draw inspiration from the region’s coastal heritage — referencing boathouses, fish racks, and working waterfronts — while expressing a contemporary architectural language. Volumes are broken down and placed gently in the terrain, allowing light, wind, and views to shape the experience.
The interior concept, developed by Bonaparte Interiør, continues the same philosophy. Calm, tactile spaces are created through honest materials, muted colours, and carefully crafted details. The interiors are not meant to compete with the landscape, but to frame it — offering warmth, shelter, and stillness.

The saunas are designed by architect Erik Mårtensson. Rooted in Nordic bathing traditions and the raw maritime climate, the saunas are conceived as robust shelters against the elements, the saunas offer a deliberate contrast between the raw, shifting weather outside and the warmth, intimacy, and stillness within.
Together, architecture and interior design form a coherent whole: understated, durable, and deeply rooted in place.

Architecture

The architecture is inspired by the region’s old fishing villages—vibrant seaside settlements with colorful houses, vernacular buildings, wharves, and docks. The hotel is thoughtfully integrated into the landscape, designed in response to the region’s rugged climate. A network of nature trails links the smaller buildings to the surrounding natural areas, weaving together architecture and environment. The project includes a marina, a saltwater spa, and extensive trails, as well as workspaces for local businesses and artists.

Vardehaugen Architects

Bonaparte Interiør has been closely involved in shaping Ytri ever since the idea first surfaced. From day one, they have worked side by side with the project’s founders to realise the vision: creating a retreat where people can return to stillness, nature, presence — and a form of luxury that does not need to be displayed, only felt. They create spaces that invite reflection and calm, yet also offer zones for conversation and togetherness. Their strengths lie in uncompromising quality, executional precision, pragmatism, and exceptional collaboration with both craftsmen, artisans and contractors.

Karianne F. Rimmereid, founder and creative director of Bonaparte Interiør, brings over two decades of experience leading one of Norway’s most respected interior design studios, known for refined, practical, and quietly bold design rooted in quality and comfort. Together with Emmy M. F. Rimmereid, interior architect with a Master of Architecture from the University of Edinburgh, the studio bridges generations and perspectives, combining Scandinavian clarity with international experience and contemporary sensitivity.
